My movement direction process begins with researching the body itself. I open with a somatic warm-up, moving into a more dynamic, guided solo improvisation, working through specific physical qualities such as spinal awareness, isolation, and shifting rhythm - layering them one at a time to build performers from somatic awareness into fuller, more versatile movement. I also draw on techniques from contact improvisation and ensemble building within the devising process.
I work to set and fix movement material through repetition and clear physical scoring. Throughout the process, my focus stays on encouraging each performer to discover movement vocabularies that are personalised and specific to each body, rather than imposing a single external style. I aim to shape that vocabulary into choreography, character physicality, and ensemble physical transitions that serve the wider production.
